APPLE CIDER VINEGAR BENEFITS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Vinegar comes from the French phrase vinaigre, which means sour wine.

Lately, this drink has been trending too much due to its health benefits about which we’ll discuss later below. But 1st things first, explaining in very short and simple terms, the process of making ACV. This involves digestion of sugars in crushed apples by the yeast to convert it into alcohol and later into acetic acid (commonly referred to as vinegar and gives a sour taste) by the action of bacteria acetobacter OR in more easier words, involves the process of fermentation due to which it also acts as a probiotic (the good bacteria for our gut).

A good brand of ACV, will have the word MOTHER on its bottle which means the combination of yeast and bacteria formed during fermentation.


Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits

Coming to its benefits, they are mainly due to the powerful heading compounds which include acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotic and enzyme. Looking at its nutritional properties, like apple juice, it is known to contain pectin, vitamin b1, b2 and b6, biotin, folic acid and vitamin c.

  • Kills bad bacteria v/s favors good bacteria

Acting as a probiotic is due to the presence of acetic acid which has the ability to kill dangerous bad bacteria and favour the growth of beneficial good bacteria in the gut.

  • Prevent cardiovascular diseases

It is known to be a good source of polyphenols which as per research studies suggest they being supportive in preventing cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, and also osteoporosis.

  • Control blood sugar levels

Further studies has also shown its benefits in controlling blood sugar levels and so diabetes. (Ofcouse, it doesn’t take the place of medicines and good lifestyle but can help in controlling to some extent)

  • Helps in weight loss

This drink has shown its positive effects in weight loss. But surely this doesn’t make it a magic drink, you need to keep your diet and exercise in check and this can further aid the process. Why it does so is because of its property of reducing sugar cravings and achieving satiety.


Apple Cider Vinegar Side Effects

Consuming too much vinegar can cause unwanted effects.

  • Tooth Decay

All vinegars are acidic in nature. Consuming undiluted apple cider vinegar can damage tooth enamel leading to tooth decay. Eventually, the teeth may develop cavities that require fillings. As the damage worsens, the teeth may start to ache or become sensitive to sweet foods and hot or cold temperatures, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

  • Low Potassium

The level of potassium in your body is reduce by consuming undiluted ACV, which can negatively affect how the heart and muscles function.

According to Dr. Robert H. Shmerling, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medicine School in Boston, MA, there have been reports of apple cider vinegar causing or worsening low potassium levels.

  • Gastrointestinal issues

Drinking undiluted ACV can worsen symptoms in people with digestive problems, such as stomach ulcers or acid reflux.

  • Skin burns

The National Capital Poison Center have listed a number of medical reports in which people had serious burns that required medical treatment after using undiluted vinegars, including apple cider vinegar, on the skin.

A report in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology Trusted Source describes a case in which a teenager while removing two moles from her nose experienced chemical burns after applying apple cider vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar Dosage

You can consume it on empty stomach / before or 30 minutes after a meal for aiding digestion.

One thing to take care is to dilute the drink in a glass of water. So take about a table spoon of ACV in a glass of water and enjoy its benefits. It is safe to consume regularly but like mentioned above, dilute before consuming or else it can have harmful effects on your body one being eroding of tooth enamel.

A common dosage for apple cider vinegar ranges from 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons (10–30 mL) per day, either used in cooking or mixed in a glass of water.
